The fact that Cowra had the home-green advantage didn’t seem to worry the Grenfell side, who won by 9 points to 1, scoring 61 shots to Cowra’s 50.
The finals will be held at Lithgow Workers Club on May 4/5.
Teams for the finals are expected to remain much the same, subject to availability, but will be published next week. In the meantime players are asked to let Ross Hunter or Martin Betcher know of their accommodation requirements.
Our Grade 4 team also had a comprehensive final round win, defeating Manildra, at Manildra, 9½ to ½ and by 69 shots to 58.
However, the team’s fate depended on the results of other matches and, unfortunately, they failed to qualify for the finals.
Club Championships: In the only Championship match played this week, John Joyce eliminated Barry Bradtke from the Major Singles competition.
The score was fairly even for the first half of the match and was locked at 10-all after 9 ends. After 15 ends, John led by just 2 shots at 15-13, but went on to win 11 of the remaining 14 ends to score a comfortable victory 34-17.
The Bowls Committee are concerned that both the Major and Minor Singles are beginning to drag on a bit and urges bowlers to complete their matches as soon as they can, please.
2018 Zone Championships: A reminder that entries for the 2018 Zone 4 Open, Senior and Presidents Pairs Championships close on Friday, May 4. Entry forms are available at the club (see Steve Galvin) and the entry fee is $5 per player.
Grenfell has been selected as a venue for sectional play in the Open Pairs on the weekend of May 19/20. The finals will be held at Cowra the following Saturday, May 26.
Social Bowls: On Wednesday and Friday a total of 38 bowlers enjoyed an afternoon of social competition and fellowship.
Prize winners this week were: Chooks – Rob Chambers, John King, David Hancock and David Ballard; Market Night Vouchers – Gary Pipe, Keith Brus, Noel Brown and Mark McSpadden; Free games – Noel Brown, Scott Baker, Steve Galvin and Gary Pipe.
Zone 4 Senior
Representative Teams: I am sure all bowlers will join me in wishing Tim Fowler, Steve Galvin and John Joyce all the very best for next Sunday, April 22, when they take part in selection trials for the Zone 4 Senior Rep teams. The trials will be held at the Majellan Bowling Club at Bathurst.
Jackpot: The bowls jackpot failed to go off once again this week. The required combination was +8 on end 13 on an odd-numbered rink.
Next week the jackpot will rise to $308.
