Pennants: It’s the final round of the Zone 4 Pennants this weekend and a Grenfell team has a great chance of winning the Grade 7 Pennant. The team will play Cowra, at Cowra on Sunday and the winner will walk away with the Pennant. Our Grade 7s have played excellent bowls throughout the season and we wish them the best of luck. Our Grade 4 team – still in with a chance depending on the results of other teams – will travel to Manildra for its final match.

Club Championships: Spectators were treated to an entertaining duel in the Major Singles match between Ray Walter and Warren Paine. In a see-sawing encounter, the scores remained very close throughout and after 29 ends had been played, Warren led by just one shot, at 22-21. However, Ray won six of the next eight ends, scoring 10 shots to Warren’s three to take out the match 31-25. In another Major Singles match, played on Saturday, Graeme Hunter scored a comfortable win over Rob Coleman by 31-9. Also on Saturday it was a case of the Manly Sea Eagles v Wests Tigers when Barry Bradtke and Lindsay Ballard clashed in the Minor Singles. Barry got away to a good start and led 6-1 after six ends. Lindsay started to claw his way back, winning a few ends, including a couple of 3s and led briefly by 12-11 after 17 ends. After that, Barry fought back scoring two demoralising 4s late in the match to run out winner by 31-17. Bowlers are reminded that they can play at any time but are asked to complete their matches asap.
2018 Zone Championships: Now is the time to get your entries in for the Zone 4 Open, Senior and Presidents Pairs Championships. Entry forms are now at the club (see Steve Galvin) and close on May 4. Entry is $5 pp. Grenfell has been selected as a venue for sectional play in the Open Pairs on the weekend of May 19/20. Finals will be held at Cowra on May 26.
Social Bowls: There were 36 bowlers out taking advantage of the beautiful autumn weather on Wednesday and Friday. Prize winners were: Chooks – Barry Butler, Nev Coleman, Marty Betcher and Gold Coast visitor Terry Rochford; Market Night Vouchers – Mark McSpadden, John King, Greg Fanning and John Joyce; Free games – Clive Anderson, Gary Pipe, Dennis Hughes and Keith Brus.
Jackpot: No teams came up with the required combination of -5 on end 19 on an odd-numbered rink this week so next week the jackpot is worth $270.
