It has been a wonderful start to the new school year, which has been particularly exciting for the Kindergarten students who have been making the most of all that “big school” has to offer. The Kindergarten, Year One and Year Two students have been enthusiastically delving into their new units of learning, as well as many other activities on offer. We enjoyed our twilight Swimming Carnival, with something for everyone to take part in, including the Novelty Events.

In our Religious Education unit this term, the students have been learning about prayer and that prayer is a special way of being with God. They will learn that prayer is about listening for God’s presence and that there are informal and formal prayers and places to pray. The students will have opportunities to understand and participate in formal and informal prayer and the “Sign of the Cross”. They will discover, through Scripture, more about the way in which Jesus taught us to pray.
In English, the students are relishing listening to and reading a variety of books, such as fairy tales, myths and folktales. They particularly enjoy having books read aloud to them during shared reading and completing reading activities based upon these stories. The students will also have opportunities to jointly contribute to writing a description, review and story retelling, whilst continuing to develop their independent writing skills.
In Mathematics, students have been focusing on ‘whole numbers’, ‘addition’ and ‘subtraction’. The Kindergarten students have been learning to count forwards and backwards, read, represent, and compare and order numbers and groups of objects. They have also been using objects to model and record addition and subtraction.
The Year One students have been learning to count forwards and backwards, estimate, identify numbers before and after a given number, represent numbers, and count and represent large sets of objects by grouping them. They have also been learning to use concrete materials to model addition and subtraction problems and use and record a range of strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems.
The Year Two students have been learning to count forwards and backwards, represent numbers, skip count, and use mental grouping to assist with estimating large groups. They are also learning to use related addition facts, use and record a range of strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems, including the jump strategy, and solve problems involving addition and subtraction by using number sentences.
In the coming weeks, the students will turn their attention to the topics of ‘three-dimensional objects’, ‘length’ and ‘area’.
