About 3.15am on Thursday, emergency services attended the Mid Western Highway after reports a vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree.
The driver, and sole occupant, a 23-year-old man, was treated at the scene before being airlifted to Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition.
On Friday, he died as a result of his injuries.
Officers from Cootamundra Local Area Command will prepare a report for information of the Coroner.
Initial investigations into the crash suggested the driver of the Mazda 3 may have fallen asleep at the wheel sometime between 2am and 3am on Thursday morning after purchasing the vehicle in Sydney.
It appears the man was travelling back to South Australia in his newly acquired vehicle before crossing to the incorrect side of the road, colliding with a small tree and then impacting heavily with a large tree.
