The November meeting of the Grenfell Probus Club was chaired by president Les Schaeffer, who welcomed 67 members, one visitor June Waters, and 18 apologies. Members were asked to stand for a minute silence in memory of Alan Clifton and Margaret Bassett.

Following the reading of the minutes by secretary, Dot Fitzpatrick, correspondence was dealt with and the treasurer’s report was presented by Brian McDonald. Rosalie White won the draw for the October birthday and Eunice Huckel for November.
The Travel Book was handed around for a 5-day Central Coast Tour in 2018 leaving March 25, based at Ettalong Beach Resort and costing $825pp. Highlights will include the Hawkesbury Riverboat Postman Cruise, historic Maitland Gaol, driving tour of Newcastle and more.
Jan Holland reported that she had presented trophies to the winners of the Speech contest at an assembly at THLHS and Beverly Kelly reported on a visit to Temora Probus Club for a 20th Birthday which included a visit to Da Vinci’s touring display, with a magic presentation of over 60 inventions. Ruth McKellar and Esma Baker gave a report of the Tamworth trip, with highlights being “The Nutcracker Suite” ballet, Nundle Woollen Mills, a trout farm on the top of the Dividing Range, watching horses perform at the Equestrian Centre, tours of Manilla and Barraba and driving around Tamworth with Golden Guitars on display.
Entertainment officer, Sally Norrie, introduced Guest Speaker, Peter Strong, from Canberra. Peter is the CEO of the Council of Small Business of Australia and works as an advocate to improve the health and rights of the 1.2 million of self employed people and employers who run small businesses who have been ignored for so long in Industrial Awards etc. He is pushing hard for a Small Business Industrial Award. Peter works alongside the National Farmer’s Federation and with Michael McCormack who is the Minister for Small Business. Two interesting comments made by Peter were that small business is the backbone of culture and the other is that China is embracing capitalism in communism and will become the wealthiest nation in the world. Peter was thanked by Gail Smith and presented with a small gift.
Our next meeting is on Monday December 11, and will be our Christmas luncheon, at 12pm for 12.30pm start, members may bring donations of money for a chosen charity instead of Christmas gifts.
