There was a festive air about our Grenfell Red Cross November meeting. This was because it was our Christmas celebration meeting and our last meeting for the year. It was a busy meeting tidying up our 2017 activities and planning for the coming 2018. President Wendy Anderson opened the meeting and after formalities Wendy thanks members for their contributions and efforts into a very successful Melbourne Cup luncheon. We highlighted the generous gift to Red Cross of $1000 from the Grenfell Garden Club. Letters of thanks will be sent.
MOW volunteers were thanked and January roster covered. We have our street stalls this Friday and Saturday December 1 and 2. All money and donations collected will go to the Myanmar and Bangladesh appeal.
The great news is that the Federal Govt will now match every dollar donated to the Red Cross until December 9, 2017. The violence in Rakhine State has created the fastest growing refugee crisis in the world. In a matter of months tens of thousands of people are fleeing violence and seeking safety in challenging conditions in Bangladesh. Our help is desperately needed.
A roster for these street stalls was organised, the raffle will be a $100 Go Grenfell card. A Christmas box was organised to send to servicemen and women serving overseas on Christmas day. Nomination for the next street stall dates were presented to Council. The 2018 Red Cross calling will be in March and dates were set for collection. More on this in the new year. A motion was made and carried to send $3000 to Red Cross Headquarters. Members were enthusiastic with the 100 year celebration of Armistice Day and would like to join in with the planting of the Flanders poppy seeds. We await further news on the sale of these seeds. We believe they are to be planted on Anzac Day. R.C. catalogues were presented and with only a few items to attend to the meeting closed, all members enjoyed afternoon tea and fellowship.
