Grenflel Lawn Bowls news

Social Bowls: If it won’t rain you may as well make the most of it and enjoy the fine weather, as they say, and our social bowlers have been doing exactly that.

On Wednesday, Steve Galvin won a chook, Lindsay Ballard the free game and Ray Walter the market night raffle voucher. Friday’s winners were Neville Coleman and junior bowler Reece Hughes (chooks), Rob Chambers and Kerry Aston (market night vouchers), while the free games went to Goulburn visitor Bruce Herrett and a talented junior bowler, Sam Gatt from Tumbi Umbi on the Central Coast, who has been holidaying with his grandfather, Kerry Aston.

On Sunday, winners were Barry Bradtke and Gary Pipe (chooks) and Martin Betcher and Steve Galvin (market night vouchers).

Mixed Pairs and Mixed Fours Championships, 2017: Have you got your nominations in for these competitions yet? Nomination sheets are on the board, so be sure you get your teams together before it’s too late.

Men’s Bowling Club AGM: Once again bowlers are reminded that our AGM will be held Sunday, October 8, at 11am. Please note that this is separate to the licenced club’s AGM, which will now be held on Sunday, November 26.

Major/Minor Championships: This competition is starting to drag on a bit, bowlers are reminded to arrange their matches by mutual agreement asap.

A bowls mystery: I was reading the other day that evidence was recently found that the legendary Swiss hero, William Tell, and his brothers, were keen lawn bowlers. Unfortunately, all the Swiss Pennants records were destroyed in a fire, so it is not known for whom the Tells bowled!

Harrison’s ‘Brevities’: Some more advice, tips and home-spun philosophy on lawn bowls by champion of last century, the late RT (Dick) Harrison:

“It often happens that a marker or scorer is sympathetically disposed towards your opponent. Cases are on record of them actually urging the player to do certain things when he walks to the head to inspect. Make it a habit to walk to the head with him.”

“In any game an opponent gets only as many shots as you allow him to get.”

Jackpot: The combination required this week was a score of +6 on End 17 on an odd rink. With no winners the jackpot stands at $110.
