During the day residents also had the pleasure of welcoming former Grenfell resident Wayne Heathcote along with his cycling team and crew who rode through town during their 2017 Bike Ride for Men’s Breast Cancer.

Most people aren’t aware that breast cancer can affect both women and men. This truth became known to Wayne’s family when their dear friend, Andrew Lynch of Grenfell, told them he had been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Andrew fought bravely before losing his short battle and passing away in November 2010. The Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) will be highlighting breast cancer in men during their 2017 Breast Cancer Awareness month and to support these endeavours, and to honour Andrew, Wayne and his team organised a bike ride from Melbourne to Grenfell, where Andrew is buried. The 850km ride commenced in Templestowe on Sunday September 24 and finished in Grenfell on Saturday September 30.

The crew of cyclists received a very warm welcome with great support from local residents including a large number of Lynch family members who were in Main Street on their arrival.

“We are just overwhelmed with the welcome from the community of Grenfell and we thank them for their continuous support.” said Wayne.

After the official welcome Wayne and his crew received a free sausage sizzle, this sausage sizzle managed to raise just over $230 for the charity throughout the Market day, the Record would like to thank the Grenfell Lion’s Club for the loan of their BBQ and jumping castle. Terry Carroll, secretary of the Lion’s club, also presented the group with a donation of $200 on behalf of the club.

The group enjoyed an afternoon in Grenfell with an evening function at the Bowling club before heading home on Sunday.
