After winning the national competition at the 2016 University Games, Hunt’s Sydney University side represented Australia in the global competition in Galle, Sri Lanka.
Red Bull Campus Cricket follows Twenty20 game structure with energiser overs where runs are worth double but a loss of wicket costs five runs.
Sydney University, who represented Australia also last year, will face off with university teams from around the world including England, South Africa and India.
Hunt and teammate Devlin Malone are the side’s permitted contracted players, with Hunt having represented Australia under 19s and Malone under contract with the Melbourne Stars.
Hunt played senior cricket with Grenfell during his young teenage years before making a move to Canberra where he has progressed through the ACT Comets system.
Red Bull Campus Cricket launched in 2012 in London.
Teams from Sri Lanka, Australia, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, India, Pakistan, South Africa and United Arab Emirates earned qualification through fiercely competitive national tournaments and will line up in Colombo for the 2017 group stages.
The action then moved to Galle International Stadium for the semi-finals and final with last year’s champions, Sri Lanka’s Business Management School, aiming to win successive titles - a feat only previously achieved by Assupol Tuks Cricket.
Tournament director Brendon Kuruppu declared, “There’s nothing quite like a high-intensity tournament to test the mettle of developing cricketers, and that’s exactly what the Campus Cricket World Final is. You learn and improve from playing against the best. This tournament is a wonderful opportunity for players to pick each other’s brains and share their own knowledge on the game, while also showing the world what they’ve got.”
“We are really excited to return to the International event this year,” skipper Jack Holloway said. “We look forward to representing the University of Sydney on a global stage against the world’s best, we have a much stronger squad this year and we enter the competition feeling confident.”
