The nominated Country of study for CWA this year is Nepal – hence and evening in Nepal with fabulous food and fellowship was enjoyed by all.
Guest speaker for the evening was Anne Gault who was ‘Volun-touring’ in Nepal along with four other people from Sydney.
Anne delivered an in depth talk on her trip and had numerous photos to show as well as a digital photographic display
Anne spent six days in the village of Junbesi clearing rocks from the site of a school building which collapsed in earthquakes.
The other four days were spent in doing ‘touristy’ things.
Anne enjoyed touring the major cultural sites in Kathmandu (most of which collapsed during the earthquake and are under repair), walking to the Everest Lookout at Phurtyeng (it was a nice walk but Mt Everest was invisible behind cloud) and visiting two Buddhist monasteries including morning tea with the monks.
The school was rebuilt as a primary school and a new secondary department is to be constructed about a kilometre out of the village next to a hostel built by Swiss benefactors over a decade ago.
Anne said there is still a lot of damage evident from the earthquakes but money is finally being released by the central government for rebuilding and the spirit of the people remains strong.
One huge pile of rubble in central Kathmandu is topped with a big sign declaring “We will build again”. And they did.
A wonderful menu of Nepalese food prepared by Carol Logan was enjoyed by all, which included: Main – Dhal Bhatt Tarkari (Lamb, yoghurt, herbs and spices), Chukauni (spicy potato and pea salad) served with steamed Jasmine Rice, Pappadums, Roti and Naan breads and dessert Gajar Ko Halwa (Carrot pudding).
This was followed by Chiya (boiling tea made with hot milk, water, sugar, ginger and cardamom for the adventurists).
During the evening a quiz was conducted on Nepal, this was a fun, entertaining part of the evening and was enjoyed by all in attendance.
CWA Evening Branch President Laureen Harvey thanked Anne for her wonderful and informative talk and presented her with a small gift of appreciation.
