On Saturday June 17, Grenfell’s Under 17’s Strikers took to the field in what would prove to be a thrilling game of soccer against Young’s Tegra.
In the early minutes of the game, the pace was set with Connor Day lofting the ball into the goal, the result of the great passing between Andrew Knight, Josh Pargeter and Connor.
New player Logan Amezdroz proved to be an excellent addition to the midfield of Andrew, Paige Hughes and Marie Knight, feeding the ball forward.
Tegra scored soon after, despite goalie Kate’s fantastic nerves-of-steal defence.
After continually pushing at goal, Conner once again scored from outside the box. Tegra responded with a goal of their own, bringing the half-time score 2 all.
Early in the second half, a refreshed Tegra were quick to score even with the superb defence of backs Shannon Best, Ethan Skinner, Chris Heatley and Jessica Pereira.
Andrew followed it up with his own energising goal.
With the fantastic passing of all the team, Aiden Skinner was able to score his first goal of the season, with Andrew scoring again soon after, bringing the ecstatic crowd to their feet.
Tegra was quick to score another two tricky goals against our warrior goalie Kate, evening the score once again.
Ethan Eyles made some great runs up the sidelines, with the midfield and backs continuing to push the ball forward.
In the last moments of the game, a Tegra hand ball was called and Conner took the penalty.
True to tradition, Connor tucked the ball neatly into the top corner of the goal to the excited cheers of the crowd and team, bringing the final score Grenfell: 6 – Young: 5.
This was certainly a thrilling game of soccer that had the crowd on the edge of their seats.
