Members and friends of Weddin HQ Rural Fire Brigade attended the dedication of the outdoor annex that has been built to the memory of long time member Stephen Mitton at the Weddin Fire Control Centre on Saturday May 6, 2017. President Stephen Chapple welcomed everyone, and explained why the structure was built in memory of Steve, a past Captain but more so a respected member and friend of Headquarters Brigade members. Steve was a dedicated fire fighter and truck driver who enjoyed being in the thick of things. Those of us who fought fires alongside Steve were always aware of his ability and had confidence being a part of his crew.

Although he is no longer with us, this area will be a reminder of a friend and colleague that we all miss. As many Grenfell residents will know Stephen was also an active member of the SES and many other organisations. Stephen’s wife Judy officially unveiled the dedication plaque and commented “What a great facility you now have thanks to the hard work of some outstanding members of the community it was a great night. Thank you for letting my family be a part of this evening. Steve was watching I'm sure.”
Special thanks to our members and Captain Lawrence Howell who have worked hard to get this annex completed. Also a special thank you to businesses and residents of the Weddin Shire who have helped make this annex possible. Karen Cosgrove, Stephen’s sister, who was unable to attend said “Stephen loved fire fighting and gave a lot of his time to the RFS. He would have been watching last night and shaking his head about all the fuss. I would have loved to have been there, thank you Weddin HQ RFS.”
Also a big thank you to the RFSA for providing funding for the catering. Thank you for your generosity and support and we hope that RFS members will have an opportunity to enjoy this new area well into the future.
