Remembrance Day 11/11/14: Remembrance Day (also known as Poppy Day, Armistice Day or Veteran’s Day) is a memorial day observed in Commonwealth countries to remember the members of their armed forces who have died in the line of duty since World War 1.
Remembrance Day is observed on November 11 to recall the official end of World War 1 on that date in 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice at the 11th hour or 11am.
The Remembrance poppy has become a familiar emblem of Remembrance Day due to the Poem “In Flanders Field”. These poppies bloomed across some of the worst battlefields of Flanders in World War 1, their brilliant red colour an appropriate symbol for blood spilled in the war.
In Australia Remembrance Day is always observed on November 11 regardless of the day of the week – it is not a public holiday.
Tuesday’s service will be held in Memorial Park, where RSL members and family representatives, Army Cadets, Town Band Buglers, and students from local schools will be in attendance. Everyone is invited to attend.
Poppies will be available at the RSL Street Stall on Friday and Saturday November 7 and 8 and again at Memorial Park prior to the service on Tuesday.
The Remembrance Day dinner will commence at 7pm on Tuesday evening at the Grenfell Bowling Club.
There will be guest speaker and the Grenfell Cadet Platoon “Cadet of the Year” will be announced. All veterans, ex-servicemen and women, their relatives and friends as well as friends of deceased veterans are welcome to attend.
Bookings are essential for catering purposes so please phone Don Forsyth on 6343 2374 or Ron Huckel 63432662 prior to Sunday November 9.
