Grenfell Gold was versing the home town West Wyalong. The team consisted of Chloe Madgwick (C), Elizabeth Nowlan, Chrystal Hucker, Taylor King, Caitlin Nealon, Lily Holmes, Megan Wilson, Teleitha O’Byrne, Emily Edwards, Jade Douglass, Annie Nealon and Taylor Hazell.
The match was tough and very exciting to watch right down to the last seconds. Both sides have had very tight defence lines during the season and Saturday was no different. All the girls worked very hard with some great defence work by Elizabeth, Chloe and Lily. Chloe, Captain of the side has led the year by example and should be very proud of her efforts. Elizabeth scored Grenfell’s first try and converted taking Grenfell to 6 – Nil.
West Wyalong soon responded and went over the try line to also convert making it 6 – 6 at half-time.
Megan, Teleitha, Taylor King and Caitlin made some good strong runs up the field all game with Emily (Dummy-half) and Lily (1st Receiver) working well together to keep the team going forward.
Emily and Teleitha when on the wings made some very crucial tags at times. Chrystal in the fullback position showed her great hand and ball skills, taking some hard pressure catches and when kicking gained lots of ground for her team.
Chloe early in the second half scored and converted putting Grenfell in front 12 -6. Again West Wyalong kept attacking the defence line and broke through to score however was unsuccessful in their conversion, with the score now being Grenfell 12 – West Wyalong 10.
For the last 10 mins of the game both teams were strong in defence and their attack never stopped trying to break through the lines with the ball going up and down the field constantly, no extra points were scored for the game.
Taylor Hazell was out injured for the last few weeks with a broken finger and together with the younger members of the side Jade and Annie cheered their side on.
Great job girls, you all put in 100% as the coach asked, worked hard as a team and came out being the PREMIERS for 2014. What a great achievement!
Thank you to the parents, Snr girls League-tag side and supporters for the sideline cheering and encouragement you gave to the girls on the day.
Congratulations to Lily for being named Player of the Grand Final and Chloe who received the Runner-Up Best & Fairest for the group.
