I do believe this is Grenfell’s first every Commonwealth Games representative.
Jan and her daughter Claire and her fiancé Justin
McCann quickly organised flights and in no time were heading off to Scotland.
Sam’s father Anthony cheered him on from “Pindari’ Ski Lodge at Thredbo.
Rugby Sevens has been played at five Commonwealth games since its first appearance in 1998.
Jan said watching the Rugby at Ibrox Stadium was truly amazing, the atmosphere was like she has never know before, the crowd participation was huge and you could hardly hear yourself speak.
Australia had easy wins over Sri Lanka 62-7, Uganda 43-5 before grinding out a 15-7 win over England in a penalties-filled Pool D Final.
Groundhog Day - Glasgow: New Zealand’s irrepressible Rugby Sevens team notched up its 30th consecutive victory in Commonwealth Games competition, tipping Australia out of gold medal contention with a 19-7 win at a pulsating Ibrox Stadium.
Two late tries to Scott Curry were the difference after the Australians harboured some hope at the break, with scores locked at 7-7.
The Kiwis were given a minor fright earlier in the day when they had to rally late against the Kenyans, while Australia produced a stirring comeback to beat Wales 21-19 and set up a grudge match with their great rugby rivals.
New Zealand finished off the Australians in the dying seconds, giving New Zealand a 19-7 win and passage through to another Commonwealth Games final.
Australia then had to play Samoa in a third-place playoff.
Liam Gill and Greg Jeloudev earned a start for Australia in a reshuffled line-up from the one that lost to New Zealand but they weren’t able to crack the Samoan defence until the final minute of the first half, when Jeloudev blasted down the right flank for the opening try.
The speedy Jeloudev had a double less than a minute later as the Australians raced to a 10-0 lead at half-time.
A simple try to Gill, on the back of some strong work from Sean McMahon, put the result largely beyond doubt just a few minutes into the second half.
Samoa never gave up in their pursuit of the 17-0 deficit but the clock was always going to be their enemy. Sam Myers nailed the coffin shut with a late try.
Well done Sam!

SURPRISE VISIT: Dianne Read and her husband Rodney Lovell from Brisbane paid a surprise visit to Valma and Barry Franklin recently.
Dianne is the daughter of Max Read and granddaughter of the late Ron and Myrtle Read who lived in No 5 Young Street Grenfell. Max Read is Valma’s first cousin.
Dianne and Rodney’s visit to Grenfell was to search for information on family history.
When they were in Grenfell their visit coincided with the Cancer Care West Car Rally, so they all enjoyed a night out at the Railway Hotel for a barbecue dinner to support the rally.
The following day Dianne and Rodney, Barry and Valma and their daughter Joanne met with Valma’s sister Janice and her husband Gerry Perceval for a luncheon at Fettler’s Restaurant.
Dianne and Rodney left after lunch to travel to Lithgow to meet more family and catch up their history.
Dianne’s grandfather Ron used to work at Postlethwaite’s farm on the Bimbi Rd.
Dianne came across some old photographs in her grandfather’s case of memorabilia and has posted them on the sight ‘You Know You’re from Grenfell’ and I have permission to reproduce some of them in this column.
