Rugby Club ready to kick off memorial match

By Josh Taylor

Grenfell Panthers hosted the Cootamundra tri-colours on Saturday in perfect conditions for rugby.

Cootamundra came with their A game determined to ruin the Panthers day. This intent was obvious with a try scoring spree to the visitors seeing the half time score 38-0. Grenfell wasn’t without opportunities, but ball retention issues let them down.

A try saving tackle by Birchy at the end of the first half brought the crowd to their feet.

It only took four minutes for Cootamundra to score in the first half, but three minutes later the Panthers hit back with a try to Will B, which wasn’t converted. Score 45-5.

The next 15 minutes saw Cootamundra on the rampage to bring their lead to 62-5. Grenfell continued to produce opportunities to no avail with some good defence and a few piercing attacks.

Neither team scored in the last 20 minutes of the game and the score remained at 62-5.

Once again, there were not enough referees to appoint to all the games so thanks to Mark for pulling on the refs jersey this week instead of the players jersey. Three points and players player went to Harry Robbo, 2 to Hugh Allen and Tim Brown picked up 1 point.

Next week is the last game of the first round and the Panthers host Temora in both grades. The Temora girls are current premiers and leading the ladder but the girls in Pink sit only one point behind and the game promises to be an absolute cracker.

More importantly this is the memorial match for George Mitton and Hugo Fenton who tragically lost their lives late last year.

George and Hugo were involved in both clubs during their junior and senior years and the clubs are joining together to recognise them.

The girls will kick off at 3:15pm and the men will play a twilight game at 4:30pm. A presentation to both families will be held between the games.

Full bar and canteen facilities will be available and we look forward to seeing you all at this special event for the clubs, families, supporters and community.
