Tyler Schiller enjoyed a standout day at Royal Randwick on Saturday, claiming victory in the prestigious Kosciuszko (1200 m) aboard Clear Thinking (GB).
Trained by Paul Messara and Leah Gavranich, the young jockey guided the British-bred sprinter to a decisive win, finishing 0.88 lengths ahead of Gallant Star, trained by Brett Robb.
Schiller’s win in the Kosciuszko marked the highlight of a busy day in which he rode four times.
He placed 6th on Coal Crusher (Race 6, Toyota Forklifts Sydney Stakes, Joseph Pride), 8th on Briasa (Race 7, The Everest, Hawkes stable), and 8th again on Green Shadows (Race 10, Hong Kong Jockey Club World Pool Handicap, Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou).
Reflecting on the Kosciuszko ride, Schiller was interviewed by 7 Horse Racing, when asked about his performance Schiler said “I missed out last year, but it’s great to be back this year and get a third one on the board with such a lovely, progressive mare.” he said.
“The Messara team and Leah have done a great job there, so I can’t take too much credit, but she had a great run in transit from the bad draw. She really dashed when she needed to.”
He credited the Messara team for preparing the horse to peak at the right moment.
When the reporter asked about his last dash win Schiller credited the horses bravery,
“She’s probably more brave than me.” He said
“Paul said she could lay in under pressure, but she didn’t get a chance to do that today — she just dashed through, hit the front, and put them away sharply.” He said.
The Kosciuszko victory is a career milestone for Schiller, earning the Young native significant attention on one of the biggest race days in the Sydney spring calendar.
