What’s notable is that the data shows that when looking at type of device, smartphones stand far above all other types of camera for the volume of uploads, a trend that has steadily increased in the last few years.
Compared to the data from 2016 the smartphone is up 2% while DSLRs rose to 33% from 25% and the point and shoot category was 12%, down from 21%.
When it came to brands, it was Apple that dominated the charts, sitting well above Canon and Nikon as the camera brand of choice for many.
Apple first passed Nikon to become the second most popular camera brand in 2014 with 54% of the top 100 devices being iPhones and almost a sweep of the top 10 Devices, accounting for 9 out of the top 10.
The Canon 5D Mark III scraped into the list, placing 9th.
Interestingly, it was older iPhone models that ranked the highest. The iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, and iPhone 5s were the most popular iPhone cameras respectively.
Canon was the second largest brand used by photographers on Flickr, responsible for 23% of the top 100 devices. Nikon was the third most popular brand of 2017, with 18%.
