There were 42 teams in the tournament and it was a magnificent effort by Blake, Nick and Ray to win all five of their matches over the two days to take home the major prize money.
To clinch the title they defeated a composite team from Bathurst/Blayney, as well as teams from Penrith, Parkes, Orange and Blayney. Well done, boys! Grenfell was also represented at the tournament with the team of Andrew Armstrong, John Joyce and Tim Fowler.
Mixed Pairs Championship: After defeating Barry and Sharyn Bradtke by 27-8 in their first round match on Friday, Steve and Lynn Galvin’s run in the championship came to an end two days later.
In their second round match, played on Sunday afternoon, they were narrowly defeated by Julie and Denis Hughes. The Hughes’s dominated the match from the outset, winning 10 of the first 13 ends to establish a good lead of 15-4, but Steve and Lynn began a resurgence after that and, in quick succession, scored several twos, a three and a six to take over the lead 19-16 with only two ends to go.
But a win was not to be for the Galvins, with Denis and Julie rallying to score two shots on each of the final ends to take the match by the slim margin of 20-19.
Wallerawang visit: A visit by a team of social bowlers from Wallerawang at the weekend could only be described as a howling success. Local bowlers did us proud with their hospitality and sportsmanship, and the Wallerawang boys responded in kind.
Two 10-end matches were played on Saturday afternoon, with teams comprising a mixture of Grenfell and Wallerawang bowlers, but on Sunday morning it was club versus club, with Wallerawang emerging as winners by three matches to two.
Sunday’s play was followed by a sausage sizzle and there were handshakes all round as our visitors piled into their mini-bus for the trek home. The success of the visit is probably best summed up in the words of one of our members, who said: “They were a great bunch of blokes and we all had a great time.”
Plans are under way for a return visit by Grenfell bowlers and I am sure many would put their hand up to make the trip. I know I would!
Social Bowls: Despite there being no social bowls on Sunday due to the visit by the Wallerawang travelling bowlers, a total of 30 bowlers turned out on Wednesday and Friday and from all accounts, some fine bowls were played. Prize winners were: Chooks – Barry Jones and Rob Coleman; Market Night vouchers – Mark McSpadden and Barry Butler; Free games – Rodney O’Neill and Rob Chambers.
Christmas Mixed Pairs at Orange City: Orange City Bowling Club will hold their Christmas Mixed Pairs competition on Saturday and Sunday, November 25/26. Play will commence at 9 am each day and will comprise 4 matches of 18 ends. Entry fee is $100 per team, which includes lunch, and excellent prize money is on offer. Entries close November 21. For more information phone the club on 6360 0704.
Jackpot: This week’s jackpot of $356 required a score of +5 on end 4, on an even rink. There were no winners and the jackpot continues to rise – next week it will be worth $384.
