Weddin Landcare Coordinator Mikla Lewis was awarded the Australian Government Individual Landcarer Award at the NSW Landcare Awards in Albury on October 26 as part of the NSW Landcare and Local Land Services Conference, which had over 300 attendees. The awards recognise the dedication, hard work and community leadership of Landcarers from right across the state.

Mikla Lewis from Weddin and Young District Landcare was recognised as a champion in the organisation. Mikla has dedicated her lifetime to teaching and inspiring others about landcare, biodiversity and sustainable land management.
“Being a part of a large Landcare network I am always inspired and in awe of all the innovative work that other coordinators and Landcare groups achieve,” said Mikla
“It was an honour to be nominated and I would like to congratulate Lloyd Foster from Coffs Harbour Bushland Regeneration Group as well as David Marsh of Boroowa Community Landcare Group who were also award recipients in their respective categories, David will now go on to attend the National Landcare awards in 2018.”
The NSW Landcare Awards are supported by the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program, NSW Government, Landcare NSW and Landcare Australia.
Mikla has organised and run several events for the local Landcare group including a recent field trip, wattle walk and a workshop on the importance of bees all with other local members of the Young Landcare group. She is a big advocate for the environment and helping to sustain and regenerate native vegetation not only in Weddin but the Young area as well.
Landcare groups are not only about actively looking after and reinvigorating the local environment they are also strongly supportive of educating the community on all things flora and fauna.
