More than thirty three riders and support crew enjoyed their stop-over in Grenfell and visited the Chrysler Car Museum early next morning. Former Grenfellites Bob Rowlands now from Mudgee and his son Brent were two of the participants on the fun/fundraising ride. Bob was Bank Manager of the NAB in Grenfell from 1988 -1991 and also a member of the Grenfell Lions Club and Treasurer of The Henry Lawson Festival of Arts. Wings4Kids – keeping families together mission is to transport kids and their families from regional areas to major cities to access specialised pediatric medical care. “The Late Mail” Postie Bike Ride raises money to assist with fuel purchases for the planes to transport the children and their families. At the end of their ride the group presented a cheque for $115,857 to Wings4Kids. A similar amount was raised in 2016.

85 YEARS YOUNG: On October 14, Peter Galvin who was born and bred in Grenfell celebrated his 85th birthday. Helping Peter celebrate this milestone was his wife Mary and their family. This included children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. The venue, Taylor Park was a great spot for a picnic and the children thoroughly enjoyed the play equipment there. After the picnic they took a trip out to "Wollombi" which was the family farm over 15 years ago. "Wollombi" is now owned by Anthony and Belinda Wilson, and they were given the tour by a very capable and polite young man called Hugh. Lots of wonderful memories, particularly for the grandchildren who now have children of their own.

COWS FOR CAMBODIA: Lorraine Ivins is going to Cambodia in February 2018 as a volunteer for 9 days assisting with the charity ‘Cows for Cambodia’. This is a fundraising tour in which each participant has to raise $2000 for the Charity, as well as pay their own air fares and accommodation. They will volunteer cooking meals, working on the farms with cows and goats, build a house and duck farm and take families shopping at their local markets. In between they do get to do some sightseeing. Cows for Cambodia is a charity run by Andrew (Cosi) Costello from South Australia'. 

Cows for Cambodia is essentially a “COW BANK”. They loan families a pregnant cow and they must look after it and when it has the baby the family get to keep the baby and they take their cow back and repeats the process with another family. It’s more about providing an opportunity to break the poverty cycle rather than a direct handout. He chooses a family who is really needy, has children. The parents sign a contract to send the children to school, the idea being if they are educated they have a head start as adults. The wife signs the contract in regards to the cow as she is responsible for its wellbeing and care. The idea is to empower the females of the country. Lorraine is running a raffle to raise $2,000 as her contribution to the charity. Lorraine said “The prizes are local as I think if I want the community to support me I need to support them.”

WELCOME TO GRENFELL: Noel and Margaret Gundry and their daughters Hannah and Regan moved from The Ponds and are now the new owners of the Railway Hotel. Noel’s dream has always been to own his own pub, hence six months ago their search began. After looking at a few hotels, they came across the Railway Hotel and fell in love with the beautiful old building and Grenfell.

Noel previously worked in a distribution centre for Bunnings at Eastern Creek and prior to that worked in pubs for twenty years in Australia and New Zealand. Margaret worked for South Sydney Council for fourteen years until they and City Council amalgamated, she worked a total of twenty seven years in the planning department. Margaret said, “We have been in Grenfell now for three weeks and are not looking back, we love the town and the people.”

DINING IN NIGHT: The RSL Sub Branch welcomes everyone to the service at 11am at the cenotaph on November 11. The branch will host a “Dining in Night’ at the Bowling Club at 7pm that evening and again everyone in the community is invited to attend.
