C (Clarrie) Fountain, A W (Wallace) Griffiths and G F Knight were Presidents of the club from 1947 -1976 and served the club faithfully as committeemen over many years.
They have raced some very handy gallopers between them over the years. Clarrie and ‘Nigger’ raced Glen Kinchie who won at both Rosehill and Randwick. At Randwick he was ridden by Noel “Digger’ McGrowdie and trained by local Max Makin.
The Knight family raced many top flight horses such as Jenarkol who caused a boilover in the Warwick Stakes at Warwick Farm when it beat the odds on favourite Purple Patch when ridden by Neil Campton. Jenarkol was also selected as the Country Horse of the Year. Other top horses were Jenny’s Star, Jen’s Idol and Fair Flame who won at Canberra when ridden by Athol Murray.
We welcome members of these families to the running of the 150th Grenfell Cup as they have sponsored the trophies for the connections of the cup winner and placegetters.
They have returned today to honour the memory of their father’s and grandfather’s services to the Jockey Club. We trust they enjoy a great day’s racing and renew old acquaintances and meet new friends.
