This year we don’t have a reward system, instead we use a rules and consequences program where students can monitor their own behaviour. It has been working seamlessly with our goal setting program where students set, work towards and attain their learning goals. The students have loved learning how to use technology such as computers, lap tops and iPads as tools for learning. We have subscribed to the Typing Tournament Program to enable students to type quickly and accurately.
Our P&C have been involved in updating the school’s playground equipment. They have catered for a combined clearing sale as well as our school mid-year concert. We thank our parents and families for their valuable contributions to our school. We have fare welled staff member Casey Patton and welcomed new Principal Jodie Russell and new 3-6 teacher Michelle Ingold. We have implemented a new Finance and Student Management System and will be trialing the NAPLAN online readiness this term.
The students have been busy in Science learning about products from cows. The K-3 class experimented and made butter from milk while the 3-6 class made rocky road ice-cream. Students then made ricotta cheese from milk and used it to make spinach and ricotta pasta that the students got to enjoy.
The students completed some fundraising with the help of staff and parents. They created ‘From The Bottom Up’ Wicking Box’s which sold for $20 each. The students used recycled materials and materials donated from sponsors to make their boxes. The students raised over $2000 which was used to subsidise their Sydney excursion. The 3-6 school excursion had a major focus on the arts. Students had a busy week in Sydney experiencing, The Sydney Dance Company where they took part in a dance lesson, NIDA where they had a drama lesson, visited the ABC studios, water colour painting at the State Library and engaged in a digital plants photography workshop at the Botanical Gardens. They also visited art galleries, museums and iconic Sydney destinations like the Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge. On their last night they enjoyed ten pin bowling and laser tag.
The school employed Darryl Knapp to run a 10 week drama workshop where students wrote and performed in their own play ‘One Line’. The play was performed at the Henry Lawson Festival Play day and at their mid-year school concert. Thank you to Mr Knapp who made this experience fun and exciting. Mr Glen Pepper visited the K-3 class to teach them how to look after their nose and ear health. The students found him very entertaining and loved the puppets and props he used.
Students worked hard preparing art and short stories to enter into the Henry Lawson Festival. Congratulations to Jimmy Death who was awarded second place in the short stories competition. Students have participated in some Video Conferences, the K-3 class participated in one called ‘Amazing Ants’ which supported their science unit ‘Living Things’. The students have conducted an experiment and collected their own ants which they are viewing through microscopes, kindly loaned to us from THLHS. The 3-6 class participated in ‘Captain Cook & The Secret Instructions’ which supported their History unit ‘Australia as our Nation’. The school experienced the production of ‘The Wolf and Peter’, the show was performed live at the Sydney Opera House and we were able to watch it in our classroom.
Sporting opportunities have included swimming, athletics and cross country carnivals, netball schools cup in Parkes, soccer in Forbes and touch football trials in Parkes. We have also embraced the Sporting Schools program, Geoff from Gecko Sports has instilled a love of and promoted physical activity among students with activities such as hockey, boxing boot camp and mini Olympics.
The school held a mid-year concert at the Caragabal Community Hall, where parents, family and community watched the students perform, at the conclusion of the play families and community enjoyed a meal prepared by the P&C. A presentation evening will be held at the end of the year to celebrate student achievements. Life Ed Van has been to visit where Healthy Harold talked to students about cyber safety, benefits of physical activity, and what our bodies need to be healthy.
Caragabal Public School will be holding Kindergarten Orientation in term 4, one day a week for 5 weeks. Students starting school in 2018 will have an opportunity to see how much fun school is.
