Presidents Day: Bowlers, don’t forget to get your names in for our President’s day on Sunday, August 27, or you’ll miss out on what promises to be a great day of bowls. Commencing at 10am, the day will consist of two games with two sets of seven ends. Entry fee is $60 per team, which includes lunch, and dress for the day is creams or club colours. A list is on the board to nominate as single entries and, from these, teams for the day will be selected by the bowls committee.
Meanwhile, President Andrew Armstrong took a team comprising himself, Steve Galvin, Kerry Aston and Rob Coleman to Cowra’s President’s Day on Sunday. Not only did the team have a great day out socially, but they also won the day and took out the major prize money. Well done boys!
Social Bowls: With the nice spring-like weather we have been having, there were plenty of social bowlers looking for a game this week – more than 50 of them, in fact. On Wednesday, Gary Pipe and Jimmy Sparkes won free games, Max Barr and Dave Hancock won chooks, while Clive Anderson and Steve Galvin won $10 market night raffle vouchers. On Friday the free game winners were Dave Hancock and Gary Pipe; market night vouchers Clive Anderson and George Dumbrell, and chooks went to Max Barr and Barry Jones. On Sunday Scott Baker and Barry Butler won chooks, John Joyce and Nev Coleman free games, and market night vouchers to Barry Bradtke and Lindsay Ballard.
Harrison’s ‘Brevities’: Here are a few more pieces of advice and home-spun philosophy on our game by champion bowler of last century, the late RT (Dick) Harrison:
“Flukes, Wicks, rubs, and all their tributaries are the sparks that spring from the plugs of uncertainty. They dazzle us and frazzle the opposition.”
“Confidence is something that hovers round every one of us, but is a very timid creature, and easily frightened away. Retaining confidence is an art.”
Jackpot: The jackpot has not gone off and now sits at $515. The combo required was -5 shots on end 14, on an even-numbered rink.
