Last Saturday, July 8, the Grenfell Panthers held their 50th anniversary of country rugby hosting the West Wyalong Weevils. Behind the scenes there was a lot of organising and hours spent making this day possible so many thanks to all those involved to make such an important day of rugby very memorable.

The day began with the Grenfell Panthers juniors playing each other in a friendly match showing all of the spectators some up and coming talent which will be sure to keep the club going for many years to come.
Then, walking sticks and all, the golden oldies assembled on the ground, the Panthers versus the Weevils. The game started with the traditional shot of port and kick off by Tommy Knight. From the kick off things seemed pretty easy going however the spectators knew that pride would take over and soon the game became a hotly contested game of rugby, pushing old bones and fitness to the absolute limit. The golden oldies certainly showed that one’s love of rugby never dies and having a beer and a game with a few old mates is something you do for as long as you can.
The Panthers 1st grade took to the field to play the Weevils, which for Grenfell was a very important game to win to keep them in the hunt for the finals contention. With a huge number of local supporters present Grenfell took to the field like a team possessed. West Wyalong just couldn’t answer to the onslaught that the Panthers threw at them. With the local crowd getting right behind the men in black the mental game was unbeatable with Grenfell adding point after point to the scoreboard. The Panthers went to half time leading the Weevils 20-0.
The boys took to the filed in the second half and did not slow down the attack at all. With the Weevils on the back foot Grenfell just kept on attacking. It was only late in the game that the Weevils scored two tries making the final score 40-12 to the Panthers. Hopefully the Panthers can take their weekend’s efforts over to Harden this Saturday.
The try scorers on the day were Mark Amey, Jake Taylor, John White, Mark Hughes, Matt Randall and the youngest player on the field Frazer Ryder. Players player went to John White who received 3 game points, 2 points went to Jake Taylor and 1 point to Frazer Ryder.
From the Rugby Club everyone, all dressed up in their finest, travelled to the Country Club to continue the celebrations with an anniversary dinner. Again a big thank you to everyone involved in the organising of this event as it was a huge success. A big thank you to Andy Friend for being the guest speaker and also to everyone who attended and participated in the event because without each one of you Grenfell rugby may have been a different story.
As mentioned, Grenfell take on the Harden Red Devils this Saturday so if you are looking for something to do come across and support the boys and help them on the road to the finals.
