90TH BIRTHDAY

CELEBRATIONS:  Edith Taylor celebrated her 90th Birthday recently with a family gathering at her home, Avonlea.

Of her children, twelve grandchildren and seven great grandchildren all were present with the exception of Brian and his family, who live in Denmark.

The celebrations continued the next day with an afternoon tea with more family and friends in the garden at The Ranch.

Edith was also treated to lunch at the Japanese Gardens, Cowra by some of her long time tennis ladies friends -. Happy Birthday Edith.

Edith was pleased to have her daughter Sue Downes from Denman home again for the Mother’s Day weekend.

ABBA FESTIVAL: Quite a few Grenfellites spent the day in Trundle on Saturday May 6 at the annual ABBA Festival and what a fantastic day it was too!

Congratulations must go to the organisers of this event for such a professionally-run and thoroughly enjoyable day. It was ABBAsolutely fABBAlous.

VISITING FROM

ROBERTSON:  Bill and Judy Wheatley of Cowra Road were delighted to have a visit from their son Charlie and his wife Samantha who live in Robertson.

Whilst in Grenfell the family enjoyed a night out to dinner at Fettler’s Restaurant and were joined by Charlie’s brother Mitch.

GRENFELL’S SPORTING HALL OF FAME: The official launch of the Grenfell’s Sporting Hall of Fame was held at the Grenfell Bowling Club on Saturday April 29 with over two hundred sporting enthusiasts, inductees, family, friends and visitors in attendance.

The Grenfell and District Sporting Hall of Fame has been created to acknowledge the achievements of sporting representatives.

The information was gathered from inductees, families and the memorabilia over the years by Skippy and Barb Mitton.

Congratulations to Nevin Hughes and ‘Skippy’ Mitton for their outstanding work to bring this night to fruition. Special thanks to their wives Verona and Barbara who were there supporting them all the way. Many community members also assisted in this venture.

It is amazing that twenty three sporting icons who were either born or lived in Grenfell or the Shire and represented Australia were inducted in to the Hall of Fame.

The following is a list of those inducted:-

Reggie McNamara (Cycling 1913), Stan McCabe (Cricket 1930’s), Harry Anderson (Clay Pigeon Shooting 1953), Jan Lehane (Tennis 1960), Rob Chambers (Indoor Bowls 1978).

Kristy McAlister (Lightweight Pairs Rowing 1989), Brendan Reeves (Australian School Boy’s Rugby League 1993 and 1994), Michael Eppelstun (World Champion Body Board Surfing 1993), Rodney Byrne (Men’s Touch Footy over 35s 1993 and over 40s 1999).

Josh Bateman (Rugby League 2004), Justin Nowlan (Rugby Union 1994), Matty Reid (Karate 2000), Anthony Brown (Side Car Racing 2002), Wayne Heathcote (Triathlon 2004 and 2015), Dean Brus (Pistol Shooting 2007 and has represented Australia 9 times in the past ten years), Emily Crutcher (Pacific School Games High Jump 2008 and IAAF World Junior Championship 2010), Jessie Mitton (Gridiron Football 2010), Sam Myers (Men’s Rugby 7s 2014, 2015 and 2016),  Clare Hunt (Soccer Under 17s 2014 and under 19s in 2016), Henry Hunt (Cricket – Australian under 19s Tri series), Tabitha Jones (Mountain Bike Triathlon 2016), Dominique Holland (Women’s Hammer Throw under 18s 2016), Sammie Wood (Soccer under 17s 2007 – 2011).

SINCERE SYMPATHY: Sincere sympathy is extended to families who have lost loved ones recently, including  Nancy Jones, Ronald Lamkin, Alan Bernard, Ivy Birch, Muriel Devane (nee McNamara) formerly of Quandialla and Joy Margaret Bean, whose funeral is today at 11am at the Presbyterian Church.
