Round One of the 2017 competition kicked off on April 8 with the Panthers travelling to Harden. Not knowing what to expect Grenfell took to the field, dominating Harden with the Hughes brothers showing how it should be done. Mark sent Stuart over with a brilliant inside pass close to the ruck, catching Harden off guard, the try then converted. The Panthers didn’t slow at all with hard hitting attack and defence making the game look easy. The next try came on the end of a back line set move with Matt Jennings crossing the line. This try was also converted. The Panthers big man Mark Amey came through, crossing the line but the try was not converted. The 4th try came to speedster Matt Randall with another brilliant back line move. The combination of John White, Harry Goodrum and Mark Hughes proved to be a great asset for the Panthers. Unfortunately the try was not converted. The second half started the same way with the Panthers showing all of the determination needed to win the game. A lineout 10 meters from Harden’s line put the boys in good position to capitalise with the forwards driving the maul allowing Stuart to cross the line again.
