In English students are learning and consolidating their knowledge of letters and sounds. Throughout the term, they will be exposed to quality literature. This will include having books read aloud to them and as well as opportunities for shared reading. The students will be participating in Voluntary Free Reading (VFR) and Sustained Silent Writing (SSW), both of which are reflected upon as a group. The students will also engage in a variety of speaking and listening tasks and develop their handwriting skills from modelled teaching.
In Mathematics the Kindergarten students are learning to count to thirty, read numbers to at least twenty, and represent numbers using objects, pictures and numerals. They are learning to count backwards and compare and order numbers and objects. In Year One, the students have been learning to count forwards and backwards from a given two-digit number, estimate the number of objects in a collection, represent two-digit numbers using objects, pictures, words and numerals, and count by tens.
The students will focus their learning on ‘living things’ this term in Science. They have already commenced learning about the basic need for survival of animals, including humans. They are investigating the senses which help them to stay alive including touch, hearing, smell, sight and taste by using their senses to describe a mystery object, and identifying the body parts associated with the different senses. They were excited to meet the new addition to our classroom, being our pet fish ‘Bubbles’. The students will be comparing the needs of pets to that of their own. On Thursday February 9, our school swimming carnival was held at the Quandialla Swimming Pool. Thank you to all who assisted and congratulations to all students on their participation and sportsmanship. Staff and students will be kept busy in the coming weeks with upcoming events and activities. We look forward to a wonderful year and sharing more of our news with you!
