Mawhinney is part of an 19-strong Rams development squad ready to take the field for the match at Leichardt Oval.
The Grenfell junior is among players from Parkes, Forbes, Bathurst, Lithgow, Blayney, Orange, Dubbo, and Condobolin, all led by 17s coach Dave Elvy – a former Parkes junior.
Also taking to the field this weekend will be the Western Rams 18s squad at King George Oval in Blayney.
The 18-strong team face the Parramatta Eels Senior Talent Squad in a trial match, under the guidance of coach Cameron Greenhalgh.
Greenhalgh said his 18s need to keep on their toes with an eager group of Rams 17s waiting in the wings.
“Barring injury most of the guys taking to the field this weekend will be in with a good chance of making the final squad,” he said.
“If the guys put their hand up over at Leichhardt though then they’ll also be putting their hand up for selection.”
A larger 30-strong Rams under 18s group – split into two sides – went down by 28 points in their recent trial against the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles’ SG Ball unit.
Greenhalgh still walked away from that test happy with the attitude shown by his squad.
Saturday’s match gets underway from 1pm, with the 18s kicking off at 12pm.
