Fans had plenty of warning that Ed Sheeran would be playing at Southern Cross Austereo’s World Famous Rooftop on Sunday.

They just didn’t know where, until the day of the event.

Radio presenters Hamish Blake and Andy Lee announced the location of the gig, at Hanging Rock, to the musician as only they could.

The duo asked Sheeran whether he was across what was happening that night, and whether he had heard of the landmark.

“I went to Hanging Rock last summer,” the musician replied.

But he and Mushroom Records co-founder Michael Gudinski still had to Google the location.

“Have you done an outdoor, mountain-based gig before?” Andy asked of the musician.

“Once... I played the highest peak in Europe,” Sheeran replied.

“Okay. Have you ever played arguably one of the top eight peaks, altitude-wise, that involve a rock in north western Victoria?” Hamish said.

Sheeran had not, he informed them through a burst of laughter.

“World first,” Andy said.

Fans braved rainy conditions for the intimate concert atop the six million year-old rock.

Sheeran is one of a number of musical legends to have played at the rock, including Leonard Cohen, Rod Stewart, Bruce Springsteen, The Eagles and Cold Chisel.

Springsteen will again play at Hanging Rock on Saturday, February 11.
