The Grenfell Lions Club the Citizen of the Year Award is normally presented at the Lions Changeover but this year’s recipient was unable to be present at this function so it was decided to present this award on the visit of our 2nd Vice District Governor Gavan Ellis. Unfortunately, the Club had a call to say that due to unforeseen circumstances Gavan and his wife Jenny were unable to attend. The Grenfell Lions club each year endeavor to recognise and acknowledge the effort of a Grenfell resident for their contribution to the community. The list of winners over the years certainly bears witness to the calibre of dedication and integrity of those selected, this year is no exception. President Lion Keith Engelsman on announcing the winner said, “Our Citizen of the Year has worked tirelessly for Royal Far West for 23 years and has been the president for 16 of those. During this time members have raised on average over $6,000p.a. Ladies and gentlemen it gives me great pleasure to announce Margaret Cuddihy as the Lions Club Citizen of the Year 2016. Margaret was bestowed with Life Membership of the Royal Far West and has attended their conferences over these years. She regularly can be seen selling raffle tickets to support the Far West and is heavily involved in their annual Christmas in July Luncheon. She has been involved with the Gunyah Craft shop for 16 years and has been the publicity officer for most of that time and currently serves as secretary. Margaret has been a member of the CPSA for the past six years and currently the President and Publicity Officer. She has been a member of the Hospital Auxiliary for five years. Margaret was also a member of the Red Cross Grenfell Branch for three years.” A very humble and surprised Margaret thanked the club for her award. Prior to the announcement Margaret, Jenny Wells and Marie Cotter, of the Royal Far West (Grenfell Branch) were welcomed to the meeting and presented with a donation of $1000 for the organisation.
