In a back-and-forth New Era Cup encounter at Paddy’s on Saturday the Mungoes emerged 26-22 winners.
“It was a very back and forward contest. The lead changed quite a few times. It just a mud bath out there,” CSU club president Brad Wright said.
“We both had yellow jerseys on and thanks to mud by the end of the game it was hard to tell who was on what side.
“It was a forwards-dominated match, with lots of strong runs being made up the middle. Portland were very strong there and helped set the platform well.”
CSU picked up the opening try of the match before the Colts fought back to score the next two tries.
Mungoes enjoyed an improved second half in the testing conditions and got back in front before holding off a determined Colts outfit.
Mungoes have now moved out to a four-game winning streak, hitting their form at the right time of the season.
Wright said his side, running fourth, are excited for their Bathurst derby against third-placed Villages United.
“We’re expecting a cracking game at Diggings Oval,” he said.
“We’re really hoping its open because we’ve got our Ladies Day planned.
“We’ve got more ladies involved in the club than the men at the moment.”
The undefeated CSU Yellow side have dominated this year’s New Era Cup League Tag competition with 10 straight wins.
