My first memory of a School Picnic was Victor Smith taking myself and my two older brothers to the Bogolong School Picnic, Mr Smith was the teacher at Bogolong Public School for many years.
He had a small English black car (Morris or Austin – if Memry serves me correctly) and I sat in the back seat, which was a novelty as I had only travelled before on the back of a T Model Ford utility.
On arrival at Bogolong there were plenty of activities to participate in with three legged races, 100 yard sprints, sack races, catch the bantam rooster, catch the greasy pig, more sedate activities for the ladies hammering the nail into a block, egg and spoon races and mountains of homemade sandwiches and cakes as well as raspberry drink to help (sometimes) to hold all the food in our stomachs.
The Public School and St Joseph’s School also held school picnics.

St Joseph’s students assembled at the school and all piled onto the back of Jack Fogarty’s truck and proceeded to the reserve at the bottom of Mendham’s Hill on Gooloogong Road, the same activities were held as all picnics entailed with all of the kids trying to excel at the various races, weaving and diving to grab a handful of feathers from the bantam rooster or grease of the greasy pig (wouldn’t the P &C committee people have another type of picnic with that) as well as piling eighty or so kids on the tray of an open truck (current OH&S laws would definitely not allow that), they certainly were nostalgic days.
