Thankfully, the world still has Jon Stewart on hand to break down with pinpoint accuracy the most important - and ludicrous - facts of the case.

On The Daily Show on Thursday, Stewart completely dismantled the scandal as it stands, not least that the US indictments over racketeering, wire fraud and money-laundering conspiracies were part of an unbelievably long-running scheme that spanned 24 years.

"To put that in perspective, this FIFA corruption started a Jennifer Lawrence ago," he said, referring to the actress of the same age.

Launching into a mock "one-man show, FIFA: A 24-Year Sting Operation", he donned wigs for skits reporting on the case through the 1990s with references to MC Hammer, Stone Temple Pilots and Friends. "I don't know when we're going to arrest these FIFA guys, but one thing I do know, the Rachel is timeless," he said, harking back to Jennifer Aniston's famous haircut.

Earlier, Stewart turned to the arrests of  FIFA officials in Switzerland as news of the $150 million racketeering scheme broke.

"FIFA is so bad they got arrested by the Swiss, a country whose official policy on Nazi gold was, and I quote, 'We'll allow it.' "

Stewart also suggested US involvement may be as a bid to win back the 2022 World Cup from Qatar, a move which had raised questions over hosting the tournament in a country where temperatures reach 140 degrees fahrenheit (60 degrees celsius).

"Questions like, 'Will humans survive the World Cup?'

"Or, 'For an extra $10 million, would they hold it on Venus?'"

Meanwhile, the Comedy Channel has announced Stewart's replacement on The Daily Show, Trevor Noah, will officially start  on September 28, following Stewart's final bow on August 6.
