A man has been charged after allegedly assaulting his de facto partner so badly that she remains in a critical condition in a Sydney hospital with head injuries.

The 46-year-old man will face court on Tuesday charged with assaulting his 51-year-old partner during an argument at their home in Quakers Hill in Sydney's north-west.
NSW Ambulance paramedics were called to the home on Hillcrest Road about 6am on Monday and found the woman suffering head injuries, serious bruising to her face and a collapsed lung.
Paramedics took the woman to Westmead Hospital, where she remains in a critical condition in the intensive care unit.
Doctors called police about 10.30am on Monday to alert them to the woman's injuries.
Detectives set up a crime scene at the Quakers Hill house on Monday, and forensic police examined the home.
Police said the 46-year-old man was arrested on Monday and charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm.
He was refused police bail to appear in Blacktown Local Court on Tuesday.
