Michael Lynch was reported missing about 1.45pm on Thursday, March 5.
Posts on social media have paid tribute to the father-of-two, nicknamed 'Spike'.
Police and emergency services resumed their search for Mr Lynch on Friday morning, March 6. He was found about 10.30am.
A witness told The Times on Thursday, that Mr Lynch had swam out to retrieve his squid jag, which had broken from his line, while casting.
Senior Sergeant First Class, Mark Goold, spoke to the media at noon on Friday.
He said a witness saw Mr Lynch enter the water to retrieve the jag, but this person had then moved on.
A short time later, another member of the public saw Mr Lynch's clothing on the shoreline and alerted the police, instigating the search.
Senior Sergeant Goold said at first it was a "rescue mission" as it was not confirmed that Mr Lynch was in the water.
The search team included police, local sea rescue squadrons, members of the local MFS and SES, and helicopters.
On Friday morning police divers were called in for the search.
Senior Sergeant Goold would not comment on Mr Lynch's swimming ability.
This is the second drowning in Fleurieu Peninsula waters this week.
Senior Sergeant Goold said "the sea can be a dangerous place and to take care".
