Jasmine also received the Anglicare Regional Alliance Prize which is awarded to a graduating student who is “the most outstanding student to demonstrate merit in and commitment to the application of academic learning to practice that is of benefit to a disadvantaged individual, group or community.

After Jasmine’s graduation lunch was enjoyed with parents and friends who attended.

Jasmine has donated part of her prize money to the Grenfell Lions Club.

Congratulations to Simon Hill, son of former residents David and Anne Hill of Campbell Act and grandson of Roma Hill of Grenfell who graduated as an Australian Federal Police Protective Service Officer at the AFP College, Barton on December 19.

Chaplain Gayl Mills lead the Police Prayer before the Commissioner Andrew Colvin, OAM, APM delivered his address.

 Twenty recruits signed the Undertaking and Oath Affirmation and were congratulated by the Commissioner.

Andrew and Kerry Withington from Queensland had a few days stop-over in Grenfell when returning from visiting family at Taralga during the school holidays.

They were very impressed with the town and enjoyed their stay at the Caravan Park.

They just loved Grenfell and were taken with the group at “The Tree of Knowledge” and said that our “Henry” was a great listener.

The Withingtons travelled to the Weddin Mountains National Park to climb up to Ben Hall’s Cave, and were amazed at the  beautiful settings of the area and in particular Seaton’s Farm.

They are looking forward to a longer stay next visit.

Keith Simpson from Goulburn and his daughter Aven from Canberra travelled to Grenfell last week to visit his brother Maurice Simpson, niece Denise Fennell and nephews Grant and Craig Simpson and Craig’s son Zac.

The group enjoyed an evening to dinner at Fettler’s Restaurant on Friday January 16.

Former residents Pam and Ian Hunter from North Avoca joined Hugh Moffitt and Justyn Armstrong for dinner at Fettler’s Restaurant on Saturday evening.

Hugh and Ian were preparing for a trip to Melbourne for the Australian Open Tennis, whilst Pam was returning home via Cowra. Justyn obviously had to go home and look after the garden.

Kim Brown enjoyed a few early birthday drinks with Lyn Hucker and Sheridan Paterson on Saturday evening.

 Kim also celebrated her 20 something birthday with family and friends on Sunday January 18. 

The Grenfell RSL Sub Branch will be holding an important meeting at the Grenfell Bowling Club on Thursday evening, January 29 at 7.30pm.

The Sub branch is calling for interested citizens who are willing to become involved in the planning of the centenary of ANZAC in April 25 2015.

At an earlier meeting some interesting ideas came up with a suggestion from Trevor Lobb who has forwarded a very novel plan to hold an Anzac camp out the night before on April 24. Tents in line, awakened with bugle calls to attend Dawn Service after an army style 1915 breakfast.

The Anzac Concert will also be held on the same night and the two functions will attract a very different age group

Much progress has been made with the location of a Waler type horse to be led with empty saddle and reversed empty boots at the front of the procession.

Margaret Carey and Matthew Lynch are working on having some school children becoming very involved in the actual displays to be mounted in the Community Hub.

George Cochrane a local who has completed many trips to the battlefields will work in with Stephen Ryder in making the display very interesting.

A lot more ideas are in the pot so it should be a great meeting.

The Sub Branch hopes to elect a working committee for the Centenary Committee at this meeting. If you have any ideas and can’t make the meeting – please let the President of the Sub Branch, Maurice Simpson or any member know.

Congratulations to all nominees for the Weddin Shire Australia Day Awards. 

The Weddin Shire has a huge contingent of volunteers (Meals On Wheels, Book Shops, Art Gallery, Community Driving, sporting and service clubs, school committees to name a few), and it is wonderful to see these citizens recognised

It would be great to see a good crowd at the breakfast and entertainment, where volunteers will be serving a hot breakfast, damper and cockies’ joy, tea and coffee, cool drinks and to hear our Australia Day Ambassador Dr Benjamin Veness. (See today’s Record for a full coverage of events).

No doubt families are preparing to get their children ready for their return to school or to get their little ones off for the first time.

Members of the community are reminded that the school bus zone (40ks) come into to force even though the children are not at school on Tuesday January 27.

The 40km also applies when the wig wag lights are flashing on the school bus.
