The incredible survival of the abandoned baby who survived six days in a Quakers Hill stormwater drain has touched hearts around the country. But the one-week-old "miracle baby" is not the first of his kind.

For all their fragilities, newborn babies are oddly resilient due to high fluid levels which allow them to survive without food or water for an extended period. Here are the stories of those tiny troopers.

Baby Bea Joy

In the midst of a roaring typhoon which devastated the Philippines city of Tacloban, Emily Sagalis gave birth to her daughter Bea Joy in a rubble-ridden airport that was temporarily turned into a makeshift medical centre.  Ms Sagalis was a true heroine, successfully giving birth on a piece of dirty plywood resting amid dirt, broken glass, twisted metal, nails and other debris.

Baby Bea was named in honour of Ms Sagalis late mother Beatriz, who was swept away by the giant waves generated by the super typhoon Haiyan that penetrated their home near Tacloban.

 

Baby Musa Dayib

Nicknamed the "miracle baby" by the local intensive care unit, baby Musa Dayib undoubtedly lives up to his title.The Minnesota-born infant survived an 11-storey fall from his parents' apartment balcony after slipping through the railing in May 2014.

His survival was thanks to soft landing spot on a mulched area below the balcony which helped cushion the impact. Had he landed inches one way he would have landed directly on concrete, and the other a metal electrical box.

Musa's mother was busy running errands while his father watched over the him and his three-year-old sister. The father was briefly out of the room when his daughter informed him of Dayib's 100 foot plummet. It is suggested it was the daughter who opened the balcony door.

Musa suffered from a broken spine and ribs, fractures in both arms and a concussion.

Less than a month later, Musa made a full recovery. 

Baby Mahmud Ibildi

Mahmud's 30-second Youtube rescue video is almost too gut-wrenching to watch, only made bearable by his miracle survival.

At two months, Mahmud Ibildi was rescued by a  volunteer in the Aleppo Civil Defence after cries were heard from beneath a bombed building in the war-battered city of Aleppo, Syria. Defying odds, Mahmud survived being buried in the rubble for 16 hours.

The footage exhibits tiny Mahmud being carefully extracted from the debris completely covered by dust, followed by off camera cries yelling "God is great! And "its a miracle!"

Although his father and sister were killed in the strike, Mahmud's mother was rescued and survived.

 

Baby Emmy Quiles

Baby Emmy entered the world a month prematurely after a doctor's ordered an emergency caesarean section on her mother, who was hit by a tow truck.

Jenny Quiles, 34, was taken to hospital in a critical condition, suffering severe brain injuries after a truck slammed into her while she crossing the road in Florida  in October. Just before the impact, it was reported Ms Quiles turned her body away from the huddling truck to shield her womb.

Two hours after Mrs Quiles emerged from a two-week long coma she gave birth to her daughter, baby Emmy. According to distraught Father, Angel Quiles, when the C-section succeeded and his daughter was announced alive and well everyone in the delivery room cheered with elation.

Mrs Quiles is in stable condition, and can now respond using her eyes. Mr Quiles has raised almost $10,000 to cover his wife's medical costs after setting up fundraising page. 

Baby Joshua O'Callaghan

Lynsey O'Callahan, a mother from Merseyside in the UK, was told at her 12-week check-up scan that there could be something seriously wrong with her son.

Dubbed "The inside out baby",  Joshua suffered from a rare illness called gastroschisis, in which the bowels develop outside the body. The condition left Joshua with his bowel trapped in his umbilical cord and less than 48 hours after he was born he was rushed to the operating theatre.

Joshua was born five weeks prematurely and survived the emergency correcting surgery. Now 11 months old, Joshua is expected to live a long and happy life.
