Daphne, daughter of Thomas and Charlotte Reid was born in Barmedman on November 18 1914, her siblings being Monica, Eileen, Cecil, Percy, Neville and Noel.
Daphne married Albert Kennedy who unfortunately passed away at a very young age.
On June 10 1972, Daphne married Eddie ‘Jo’ Huckel and moved to Tyagong Street in Grenfell. Eddie’s wife Doris had passed away in April 1966.
The Huckels lived for a number of years in Tyagong Street, before moving into the Emu Creek Park Senior Citizens’ units in Park Street Grenfell. Later with her sister Eileen and brother Percy they had three units built in DeBoos Street, Temora where Daphne still resides next door to her sister in law Alma.
Jo pre-deceased Daphne on September 27 2001.
Ian Huckel, Eddie’s son, married Daphne’s niece, Desiree Kennedy and they together with Eddie’s daughter Lillian and her husband Rodney Nott and their families were responsible for organising the party to celebrate this milestone.
As well as her family, friends and members of the Probus Club of Temora quite a few friends travelled over from Grenfell for the celebrations.
Daphne was the recipient of many well wishes including one from Queen Elizabeth ER, the Prime Minister of Australia Tony Abbott, and the Governor General Peter Cosgrove.
A very special award was a Papal Blessing received from The Holy Father Pope Francis. Father Simon of Temora was on hand to make this presentation to Daphne and gave her a blessing.
Many guests paid tributes to Daphne during the afternoon before she was called upon to cut her beautiful 100th birthday cake made by her great niece Nicole.
Guests were asked not to bring a present, but write a memory/story or bring a photo so that a “Memory Book” could be put together.
A power-point pictorial of Daphne’s wonderful 100 years was played during the afternoon.
A highlight of the day was when Ian Huckel interviewed Daphne who was able to answer all his questions and guests learned a lot they had not known before.
One of Daphne’s greatest ambitions is to be a contestant on “Deal or No Deal” and I am sure the family will organise that.
When sisters “Dd” Daniell Hanrahan and Stacey Thomas found out they were both pregnant earlier in the year and they thought it was special enough that we were both given the due dates of October 18.
As fate would have it they both welcomed their little babies on Friday October 10.
Daniell and Matt welcomed Ebony Marie Hanrahan at 2:27pm, making her a lovely little sister to Riley
Stacey and Rory welcomed their first child, Rhys Owen Thomas at 6:59pm weighing 3.53kg and 52cm long.
As you can imagine, this was both very convenient and hectic for their mum and dad, Veronica and Col Davis of Grenfell and luckily they were both at Orange Base Hospital. Everyone is going great.
Hugh Moffitt, who thought he was going out for a quiet birthday dinner on November 14, was pleasantly surprised to see his son Alex home from Kalgoorlie.
Another surprise was that Sue and Justyn Armstrong whose garden Hugh had been looking after whilst they were away meeting their newest grandchild was back in town. Hugh’s sister Jenny Hetherington and her husband John as well as Jim and Lesley Marden and Penni and Keith Starr also joined in the celebrations.
Paula Briggs, daughter of Virginia and Allan Drogemuller was home in Grenfell last weekend with her son Harrison.
Mavis Drogemuller, Paula’s grandmother had been up visiting the Briggs at Toukley and they made the trip to Grenfell to bring Mavis home.
Mavis caught up with her brother Les Simpson who was born in Grenfell and also lives on the central coast and had a great time reminiscing.
Peter Brown did all the right things and invited his wife and family out for dinner to celebrate their wedding anniversary on Thursday November 13.
As they were about to enjoy their dinner, Peter who is on call 24/7 was called to Quandialla as the town was out of water.
Needless to say Carly and children enjoyed their dinner and had to take Peter’s home.
Peter and Carly enjoyed a dinner on Friday evening to celebrate at Fettler’s.
