The rural fire service was called to a property on Longhursts Road, west of the town, around 1.30pm Thursday afternoon in response to reports of a well alight fire.
Three trucks and 12 firefighters as well as police attended the scene.
When volunteers arrived at the property the roof was well alight and starting to collapse.
RFS South West Slopes Zone spokesperson David Nicholson said it was unsafe for firefighters to enter the house.
He said the focus of the crew was asset protection.
“Volunteers used defensive tactics to protect the surrounds of the house to stop the fire from spreading,” he said.
He said it took firefighters up to three and a half hours to fully extinguish the blaze which completely destroyed the house.
There was no-one in the house at the time of the blaze.
The cause of the fire is now under investigation.
