On Sunday, July 29, Grenfell Girlannas travelled to Cargo to take on the girls for a second time.
The first time around Cargo had beaten us 18-0.
We have been training hard since then and hoped to come out with a win.
Scoring started early, as Cargo errors lead to Grenfell having great field position.
A run from dummy half saw Anna score under the posts with the kick converted by Kate - Grenfell 6 - Cargo 4.
Cargo hit straight back and from tap-off were able to get good metres, a speedy player was able to weave across the line for the points. Kick successful, it was 6-6.
Grenfell were making excellent ground in attack, with the ball moving precisely and fluently though the players - it wasn’t long until the ball fell into Prue’s hands who had hit a hole at speed and was able to run 40m to score under the posts.
Kick successful - Grenfell 12 - Cargo 6.
Cargo was doing a lot of kicking, and a very high ball had Grenfell under pressure and led to an error close to our own line.
Cargo was able to capitalise on this, and soon had another try, which was converted, the scores were locked at 12-12.
From the tap off Grenfell were making good ground, but some silly play saw an early turnover.
A speedy Cargo player split the field and after great chase by Amber and Danielle, proved too fast and she scored under the posts - conversion unsuccessful. Cargo 16 - Grenfell 12.
There was only minutes left on the clock and we knew we needed to play smart to get us in the lead by half time.
Some master planning between sisters saw Anna tap off and draw and pass to put Prue through a hole to outpace the opposition 40m to score.
Conversion successful by Taya, we were in the lead 18-16 as the half time bell sounded.
Defence was the key for the second half, if we could strengthen our defence and keep playing as we were, we may come out on top.
We were putting a lot of pressure onto the Cargo team and they didn’t like it; excellent passing between players saw us gaining great ground every time we were in possession.
As we got close to our try line, a grubber on the last had Cargo under pressure and they took the ball dead. The line-drop out was poor, barely making the 10m and Temeika was able to pick it up and weave her way over to score.
Conversion unsuccessful, Grenfell were in the lead again 22-16.
Cargo’s speedy player was doing some damage, and will definitely be one to watch if we meet again in finals - the questionable ‘natural running motion’ saw several hands hit away from tags and Cargo were able to score Grenfell 22 - Cargo 20.
There wasn’t long left on the clock.
Great ball play from the girls saw us gain great metres as the clock wound down, and Anna was able to score a final try.
Final score Grenfell 26 - Cargo 20.
Unfortunately our game scheduled for August 4, resulted in a forfeit from Molong; so a win for us but it would have been nice to have played in the lead up to our last match of the season before finals.
Our next game will be on Saturday August 11 vs Canowindra at Canowindra with a 2pm kick-off.
We hope to see you there to support!
