Last weekend the Grenfell Stingers travelled over to Parkes to play the Railway Chooks. The Stingers have always enjoyed playing the Chooks and looked forward to a friendly, clean game and that’s just what we got.
Coming off a win against Parkes Services the Stingers were out to make it two in a row.
The starting eleven (and only eleven), were: Mark ‘pumped up’ Harvey, Murray Walker, Mitch Wheatly, Ben ‘Coach’ Walker, Brad Galvin, Clare Walker, Gary ‘Cadel’ Halloran, Dave Knapp, Dan Harvey, Adam Green and Michael ‘Alfred’ Walker.
Grenfell started well putting early pressure on the Chooks’ defence and it wasn’t too long (15mins) before Grenfell capitalised.
Some good build up play from the backs and midfield some clinical passing from the forwards and a nice chip over the keeper from Michael to top it off put Grenfell 1-0 up.
Chooks came back with some good build up play of their own, especially through the middle of the field (come on Midfield), but our trusty old Keeper held them at bay with some fine saves and some fine yells of “Come on!” and “Yeah!”.
But Grenfell got the better of them again towards the end of the first half, once again Michael showed off his ability to put the ball in the back of the net.
Grenfell up 2-0 and looked to be going into the break with a healthy lead but Chooks had other ideas.
With ten seconds to go the Stingers were already thinking about oranges and Gary’s lollies and forgot they were still playing, which allowed Chooks to score.
Score 2-1 at the break.
It was a game played in extreme weather (the sun was out), the team was not used to the warm weather and for much of the second half it seemed we were battling both the sun and each other.
Chooks seemed to have the upper hand for most of the second half but Stingers managed to hang on for the win.
It finished 2-1 to Grenfell.
We will all have to pull together and work as a team this week if we’re to make it three wins in a row.
Congratulations to Brad who got player’s player of the match (I think).
