Last Saturday at a cool and overcast Lawson Park Grenfell defeated the Trundle Boomers 42-22.
This was the Goannas second win of the season and their first win at home for over 12 months.
Grenfell went into this match with some confidence after snaring big Fred Malolo for the remainder of the season and having a full squad of 20 players.
Trundle had been showing some good form of late including a good effort against Condobolin and a draw with Eugowra.
Fred put his stamp on the game early on making some barnstorming runs and in the process scattering defenders in all directions.
Daniel Lennane opened the scoring when he darted over from close range and Grenfell went to a 10 Nil lead after Jeremy Dombrain ran 40 metres to score after a break by Fred.
Trundle fought back with 2 converted tries to slippery halfback Brendan McAneney before Hayden Makin squeezed over out wide and in a repeat of his earlier effort Jeremy scored after a Fred bust.
Some soft defence allowed Trundle to score leading into halftime to make it 20-18 to the home side at the break.
Trundle came out after half time with plenty of spirit and talk resulting in an unconverted try to strong backrower James Litt.
The game was in the balance at this stage but a flow of possession for the Goannas showed what they could do.
Two converted tries to forwards Dallas Hazell and Tearii Kotuhi (Teabag) put the Goannas in the drivers’ seat and then they finished the match off with late tries to Fred and Daniel Lennane.
This was a competitive game and played in the right spirit with Grenfell only getting on top in the final 20 minutes.
The whole team gave 100% and knuckled down to play some good footy when Trundle came hard at them early in the second half.
Best for Grenfell were forwards Fred Malolo, Mick Dombrain, Dan Lennane, Dan Barclay, Ben Walker, Dallas Hazell and Teabag.
On Sunday Grenfell are at home again against the Manildra Rhinos with the Girlannas kicking off at 1.00pm and the main game at 2.00pm.
Bowls Day and Supporters Draw
Last Sunday over 40 players braved the cold and bleak conditions to participate in the Goannas Bowls Day. Although the weather wasn’t kind everyone had an enjoyable day with the winners being the team of Richard Hasler, Rodney O’Neill and Peter Meredith. Runners up were the Brebner boys Jarrod, Conner and Declan and the third placegetters were Kate McSpadden, Danielle Smith and Danica Perceval.
The Players/Supporters draw has jackpotted to $400 and will be drawn at the Albion Hotel after the Manildra game between 5.00 – 5.30pm.
A big thanks to everyone who supported our Pasta night on Saturday we had a great roll up.
