The Blowes Cup Women’s Competition opened last weekend with the Pink Panthers playing host to the Orange Emu’s and Bathurst CSU Ewes. At only 4 days notice Grenfell managed to gather a team of 15 players and although lacking a great deal of fitness and organisation the Pinkies still showed similar form to that taken into last season’s grand final.
First up the Pinkies took on Emus in what was a social 8 on 8 game with some of the Grenfell players helping Emus out for numbers. Plenty of laughs were had at the shirt grabbing and turn style attempted tackles, as well as all the huffing and puffing. The official final score was Pink Panthers 41 – Orange Emus 15.
Warm up and refresher against Emus complete, the second game for the Pink Panthers was a far more competitive match with both teams having a full complement of players. As has been in previous seasons there was no denying the differences in the two squads; CSU are a young fit and fast crew, whilst the Pinkies sport a more imposing stature along with an array of age and experience.
Pinkies didn’t take long to fall back into their traditional rolling attack, with unbroken phases putting CSU on the back foot early and taking the girls into range. Polly scored first for the home team and Betty converted opening things up at 7-0. Two further tries came after half time for the Pinkies through the brilliant work of Betty and superstar import ‘Irish’. CSU weren’t giving up and although throwing everything they had at the Pinkies defense they were unable to penetrate the line being held up on 3 consecutive occasions. Final score 17-0 Pink Panthers.
This weekend will see a rematch between CSU and Grenfell at home kicking off at 12:40pm. Come along and cheer on the girls.
