CLOSE BUT NOT CLOSE ENOUGH: The No 2 Pennant players played at Nelsons Bay over the weekend for the State title. The playing teams were Rodger Baker, Ray Walter, Blake Bradtke and Graeme Hunter. Tim Fowler, Ross Hunter, John Joyce and Steve Galvin. Dylan Troy, Matt Reid, Brad Galvin and Andrew Brown. Narromine were the first team we played on Saturday morning. The Grenfell team knew we needed to get off to a good start to stamp our authority on the match. This game was always close, with the master board only having 10 shots difference the whole game. It came down to the wire and the Grenfell boys had a win by 1 shot, 56-55. The second game was against neighbours Cootamundra Country Club. Coota had lost their first game and we knew they would be out to turn their weekend around. Wow did they do that. Grenfell was standing and watching as Coota piled on the shots and beat us by 28 shots, 74-46. This put a dent in our hopes for the weekend but all was not lost. We had to win on Sunday morning and hope that Narromine and Coota had a draw.
We played Walgett in our third game and come away with a solid 13 shot win, 65-58. Coota and Narromine were neck and neck all the way, which looked good for Grenfell but Narromine finished too strong for Coota and won the game.
This meant that Grenfell had come second in our section, with Narromine winning the section. Harbord was the winner of the No 2 state flag. This was a great experience for all our players and everyone come away with more knowledge about the game. Abig thanks to Jimmy for coming up and being on standby. To our manager, Barry Bradtke, thankyou, a job very well done. To all supporters and spectators, thanks heaps.
LVDBA VS WDBA: This Sunday Lachlan Valley play Western in an Inter-district game. This is at Grenfell starting at 8.30am. The Grenfell players selected are: S. Galvin, G. Hunter, J. Joyce, R. Hunter, R. Baker, T. Fowler, J. Sparkes, B. Jones and C. Brus. Caragabal players selected are M. Pollock, A. Taylor and I. Eastaway.
BITS AND PIECES: Triples nominations close this Sunday afternoon, you only have a few days left to put your team in. The bowls jackpot didn’t go off this week, the result was -4 on end 1 and now sits at $103.
< INDOOR BOWLS
We had enough players for two full mats of nine triples last Friday night which is a good game as every player get as three bowls.
The winners were T. Hazell, N. O’Brien and E. Gluyas winning both games and scoring 25 points. They collected the monthly vouchers. The runners up were T. Roberts, M. Rudd and M. Reeves, winning one game and scoring 21 points.
Next Sunday, August 11th, is our District Singles Day and the day we see some very good bowls played. Cowra have already indicated they will have eleven players taking part and we will have two or three from our own club involved, so, we should have a good day of bowls.
During September we have our District mixed pairs and also the Young Open Day – so, plenty of bowls in September.
Don’t forget our meeting after bowls next Friday night. We have a few arrangements to be made for the Sunday as well as new selectors to organise.
< LADIES' BOWLS
This weekend our girls leave for Fingal Bay to play bowls in the State Finals. On Tuesday, July 13, they play Urunga in the morning and Scone in the afternoon. On Wednesday morning the team will play Mudgee. We wish you all the best and hope you can bring home the No 3 Pennant Flag.
The South West Districts Women’s Bowls is well- represented in the State Finals as Young won the No 2’s Finals and are now also off to the State and Cootamundra just missed out by a couple of shots to take the No. 4’s
Congratulations to the Men’s Bowling Club No 2’s in winning the Zone finals and who, as a result, are now playing at Nelson’s Bay for the State Finals.
First up is Narromine, then Walgett followed by Cootamundra.
Today, the Grenfell ladies are playing at Young in their Versatility Day.
