As far as numbers count the Social golfers had all the keen ones last week. Of the four competitions played last week, the social golfers’ field was the only one in double figures.
Eleven players hit off to play the bottom nine and Shawn Logan won the day with 30 nett. Gary McSpadden was the next best on 31 nett and he also won the putting. The longest drive came off the club of Craig Smith and Obey showed he still has the touch by being nearest the pin.
This competition is played every Sunday morning, starting around 8.30am. Any casual golfers would be welcome, so just turn up, see Marco, and he will point you in the right direction.
Last Sunday we played for trophies donated by Grenfell Meats. The weather wasn’t too bad but only six golfers turned up to support the event.
It was played in two grades and the winner of the A Grade trophy was Barry Bradtke with a creditable 67 nett, Brian Brown had the other score in A Grade, 71 nett.
The B Grade trophy went to Brian Hughes on 72 nett. Peter Mawhinney was 2nd in this division on 74 nett and Bob Bassett filled 3rd place with 77 nett. No prizes for working out who came last, but he was there and had 79 nett.
Thanks were expressed to Lyall and Grenfell Meats for sponsoring this annual event and at the same time all agreed that the numbers playing was very disappointing.
Saturday’s medal round was conducted with only six players, with the weather very cold and showery. After all had thawed out it was Pewter Mawhinney who claimed the best position with 68 nett. Second place was shared by Barry Bradtke and Farren Stevens on 72 nett and Brian Hughes was 3rd with 75 nett.
Peter, Barry and Farren were allotted balls and there was no nearest the pin.
Wednesday’s golf was no better, with only five teeing off for the usual stableford. Brian Brown had a reasonable score with 35 points, Max Barr was next best on 31 points and Cec Aston just made 31 points to be 3rd.
Brian and Max were the ball winners and, once again, there was no nearest the pin.
However, after all the poor fields at home, Grenfell Veterans had a respectable representation at the monthly tournament at Parkes last Thursday. Eight Grenfell vets played in a field if 61 players and three of them were among the winners.
Rob Coleman was the winner of the A Grade stableford event, Marco was the winner of the C Grade stableford event and John Grogan was the winner in the G Grade championships.
Another two Grenfell players won balls in the ball competition and Marco got on the green once - but it was a big green.
One match in the Singles Match Play competition was completed with Peter Mawhinney winning over Barry Bradtke, 1 up.
Another trophy round is scheduled for Saturday 27, courtesy of Greg Hughes. Please support it.
On Sunday 28, Grenfell is hosting the Mixed 4BBB Keno final with three pairs from Grenfell participating. A time draw is on the notice board. Local golfers can join in the end of the field.
After 18 rounds in the tipping competition Steve O’Byrne has gone to the lead with 179 points, Greg Oliver is in 2nd place with 178 points and in 3rd place is Terry Mawhinney with 177 points.
For the juniors, K O’Byrne and A Joyce are neck and neck with both on 171 points.
Duty Members for this Sunday’s Meat Market are Dot Starr and Jan Myers.
