Spray Safe and Save has just been approved to conduct the Advancing Spray Application project across Australia under the National Workforce Development Fund. This means that the federal government will subsidise the cost of training. At this stage, Craig will be delivering training in Tasmania and the Melbourne turf industry as well as conducting courses across NSW. More locations are being negotiated.
Option 1 of the project includes a one day workshop and then a workplace visit to calibrate and test chemical application equipment. Participants then receive the Skill Set comprising of:
AHCWRK302A Monitor weather conditions
AHCMOM315A Operate chemical application machinery and equipment
AHCCHM401A Minimise risks in the use of chemicals
AHCCHM402A Plan and implement a chemical use program
Businesses with 0-99 employees pay $330 per participant; government pays the remainder
Option 2 of the project includes a workplace visit to calibrate and test chemical application equipment. This option is for those who already hold:
AHCCHM401A Minimise risks in the use of chemicals
AHCCHM402A Plan and implement a chemical use program
Businesses with 0-99 employees pay $220 per participant; government pays the remainder
Participants then receive the remaining two units in the Skill Set.
Each option updates chemical user accreditation.
In 2010, Craig was awarded the Pratt Fellowship by the International Specialised Skills Institute. He then travelled to Belgium, The Netherlands, Denmark, England and Wales to investigate how sprayer testing was conducted overseas. In 2016, the European Union will introduce mandatory testing of spray application equipment.
The Advancing Spray Application project introduces a voluntary sprayer testing element to Australian agriculture. It is starting a conversation about the sort of system we may like to see introduced here if this country follows Europe’s lead. Craig’s report entitled Industry: Australian Agriculture – Crops is available at:
An Advancing Spray Application workshop will be held on Tuesday, 20 August at the Grenfell Country Club with workplace visits to follow on the 21 and 24. Businesses with a significant number of employees can hold the training at their workplace.
