Grenfell bowl over Canowindra at Top Lawson Oval

06 Nov, 2009 09:18 AM
Once again the toss was won by the Grenfell side, and once again electing to bat first.

The Grenfell boys got off to a terrible start, losing Steve Holmes (0) in the first over of the game. This bought in our star import Darren Soloman to join our returning opener Dallas Hazell.

It took no time at all for these two to swing the game back in the home team’s favour with a great balance of power and touch, quickly dominating the bowling line up and getting the run rate rocking along a 5 runs an over, and making it look easy at the same time.

But a break through from young M. Clyburn picking up the wicket of Darren Soloman for 44 ended an entertaining 87 run stand from the two big hitters.

Ben Mitton came to the crease with the information Dallas wanted to know, his score.

After finding out Dallas set out to get his 50 in a cautious, safety first style of cricket… 2, 4 and a big 6 in as many balls to bring up a well played half century.

Unfortunately for Dallas the moment was short lived with the innings coming to rest for 59 once again at the hands of M. Clyburn.

Canowindra bowler B. Willson then set his sights on our middle order. Taking 4 wickets in his next 3 overs. Picking up Ben Mitton (19), Dave Wood (4), Carl Brus (21) which consisted of two monster maximums in a row, and Luke Murphy (1) all caught, which seemed to be the theme of the day.

The Canowindra side tightened the grip on Grenfell, and in quick fashion, knocked over the last 3 wickets of Luke Eppelstun (7), Corey Clarke (2) who I might add was the odd one out by getting bowled, and Mitchell Lowe (1) for just2 runs. Leaving Craig Smith (1) not out at the other end.

Canowindra’s best bowler was B. Willson with the outstanding figures of 5 – 39.

It was now Grenfell’s turn to bowl, and Grenfell’s openers didn’t disappoint.

From the get go Luke Murphy and Luke Eppelstun destroyed the top order with a great display of swing and pace bowling.

The first of B. Traves (1) came in the second over when a fast outswing caught the edge and was taken behind in spectacular fashion by keeper Steve Holmes.

We only needed to wait till the next over for the next breakthrough with Luke Murphy bowling his subtle outswingers, he beat the edge of B. Willson (0) and banged into his off stump.

Once again we didn’t wait long, with Luke Eppelstun picking up his second wicket maiden in a row picking up the other opener J. Devlin (3) bowled.

This had the visitors reeling at 3 for 6 after 4 over’s.

The next hurdle turned out to be tricky. T. Kennedy has been a thorn of ours over the years we have played Canowindra, and this time was no different.

He had hit Canowindra back into the game with a 65 run partnership between himself and M. Clyburn. But he went for one too many and eventually was caught by Carl Brus off the bowling of Ben Mitton for 53.

Once the partnership had come to fall, Darren Solomon picked up the first of his two wickets the next over, bowling M. Clyburn (8).

Grenfell had the visitors in trouble at 5 for 72, and had them looking for runs that weren’t there when Brett Traves was run out at the hands of Craig Smith, our brick wall at square leg.

Grenfell chasing their first win could smell the blood in the water, and we weren’t going to let this one slip. Bringing back our openers to take on the tail.

Luke Murphy picked up two wickets in two over’s of M. Devlin (13) and R. Toole (0) to just pip Luke Eppelstun on the line for opening bragging rights.

But it was the change of pace that finished the game off for us, with the two batsmen who stared for us becoming sheiks of tweak.

Dallas Hazell and Darren Soloman picked up the last two wickets of N. Traves (5) and N. Delaney (9) with a good display of off spinning. Getting the visiting batters to hit in the air, eventually getting them caught.

Congratulations to the boys for a great performance, finally getting the monkey off our backs picking up the first win for season 09/10.

Ben Mitton, seen here driving another lusty shot to the boundary, was in fine form for Grenfell in the game against Canowindra last Saturday at Top Lawson Oval.
