Fingerscrossed that the beautiful rain we had over Easter is the start of something good, like an Autumn Break. I’ve been thinking the way the Bathurst burrs and Devil’s claw have grown this summer, our crops will be bumpers.

100 Years of Occupancy

It was fitting to have a small family gathering at “The Pines”, the home of the Knight family for 100 years. Hugh Patterson Knight came to the “The Pines” in1908 with his young family, which included 8 children (1 had died as an infant before the Knight family come across from SA and 2 died in their teens while at “The Pines”).

Now, another generation continues to live in the original house.

The youngest one being Hugh Patterson Knight, named after his Great-great Grandfather, son of David and Bec Knight.

On anther note, Tom and Barbara have been keenly listening to their grand-daughter’s Olympic swimming trials.

Sarah Friend 14, daughter of Susan, as been swimming at Homebush in the Olympic trials.

On Saturday she swam in the 50m backstroke and although she did not qualify, she did do a PB. She had another event last night in the 200mbackstroke.

At only 14 she still has a lot of years of competing and just to make it to the trials is a great achievement.

Olympic Dream

Emily Crutcher has her sights set on the 2012 London Olympics. Emily has just competed in the NSW Little Athletic State Titles where she won the U14 Girls High Jump.

Jumping a whopping 1.70m, which smashed her previous best of 1.64m and beat her nemesis of the last few years.

Emily has now been invited to join the NSW Institute of Sport as part of the Emerging Athlete’s Programme.

It is targeted at young people who show exceptional ability in their chosen sport and Emily has sure done that. It allows Emily to have access to specialist coaches and clinics throughout the Institute.

Emily trains very hard with a daily programme set by her coach in Sydney and travels to Sydney on a fortnightly basis for a face to face session. Her next goal is to make the Australian Team for the 2009 World Youth Games in Italy.

Emily was not the only Grenfell person performing well at the State Titles. Gerard Holland came 2nd in the U13 Shot Put.

This saw him selected in the U13’s NSW Athletic Squad which is pretty special as only 11 boys and 11 girls are selected state wide.

He will be competing in all three throwing events in Melbourne at the Nationals in a few months time.

Four Generations

Peter and Mary Moffitt are enjoying having their daughter Emily Douglass and granddaughter Isabel stay with them for four months while Emily’s husband Brian is deployed with the army in Iraq.

This is their first grandchild and also the first great grandchild for Marion Moffitt.

Isabel was born in Brisbane on February 14, 2008. She has had many visitors already, including her aunty Rachael Power, who joined the family law firm of GGM lawyers last year and is based in Cowra. Any stories that Isabel is being thoroughly spoiled by her grandparents are quite true!

Garden Engagement Party

“Bogolong”, home of John and Jenny Hetherington, was the venue for an engagement party for Auburn Carr and James Hetherington.

The luncheon for 80 guests last Saturday had a yesteryear feel, with croquet on the lawns as well as tennis, bowls and table tennis.

Bogolong lamb on the spit, prepared by Ritchie Hockings, went down very well.

Guests travelled from as far as Coffs Harbour in NSW and Auburn’s family and friends made the trip from SA and Vic.

Although it was only for lunch, everyone was having such a great time, they stayed for dinner as well. Auburn has just been appointed as the new Tourism, eco-development and CTC officer for the Weddin Shire. Congratulations all round.

Old Mates

Georgie Small and his wife Jean travelled over to Euabalong West last Saturday to help his old mate, Norman Dykes, celebrate his eightieth birthday.

Norman was born at “Pinnacle”, one of12 children and left the district in the late 50’s and headed out west around Condo and Lake Cargelligo. It was a great party with over 200 guests.

Canberra Folk Festival

A fantastic day is how Jenny Smith describes her EasterSaturday jaunt to the National Folk Festival in Canberra.

As usual, the Folk Festival was a showcase of amazing Australian and international talent.

Highlights of the day for Jenny were the performances by the Melbourne Scottish Fiddle Club (together with jigs from Davydd McDonald, former Australian Set Dance Champion), the Davidson Brothers (Fiddle Band of the Year at Tamworth), The Spooky Men’s Chorale (a capella voice), internationally acclaimed multi-instrumentalist Eleanor McEvoy, and, last but not least, the multi-talented Wheelers & Dealers, who will be performing at this year’s Henry Lawson Festival Variety Concert.

Jenny was able to speak with Christine Wheeler, the leader of the Wheelers & Dealers, who is looking forward to being in Grenfell in June.

Whilst in Canberra, Jenny and her sister Welbury enjoyed staying with Jenny’s daughter Katrina and her husband, Craig Burgers.

Easter Visitors

Jenny Wells(Gavin) had her boys, son Jason and two grandsons Christopher and Nicholas for a visit over the Easter break.

Being city boys they went bush for most of the weekend spending time camping at the Reeves property at the back of the mountain.

They all came to the Guinea Pig races as Jenny’s grandson had a racing guinea pig.

They all had a terrific Easter.

Easier Rider

The scooter rider, Ryder has just turned 50.
