This has been a good year for the Weddin Wanderers, with several walks in territory new to everybody and others in places not visited for a while.
Next Sunday’s jaunt, the last for 2009, will be a saunter up to Koorawatha Falls, which is only a few hundred metres from the parking area and, unless it is very hot, shouldn’t be too taxing.
Anyone who saw the recent Exhibition by local photographers at the Grenfell Gallery would remember Julie Grattan’s very fine shots of the area, which is picturesque and green-looking even in dry times, and well worth a visit at any time of the year.
We will be fortunate to see even a trickle of water over the Falls, but that gives one a better chance to appreciate the rock formations.
Sometimes, after the last walk for the year, we treat ourselves to an alfresco breakfast, and that is the plan for Sunday.
It’s more a social than a gastronomically memorable feast, but there will be a choice of cereals, some juice, bread rolls and croissants, a couple of jams and vegemite, (and plates and spoons etc), with thermos coffee and tea, so you won’t have to worry about bringing a snack to sustain you, and of course it will be free.
Last month’s walk on October 24 was the most strenuous we’ve done for a while, and very enjoyable and rewarding.
There were only six of us, including Leader Ian Brenner, and one of us has two fairly new knees and another hopes to acquire a new one soon, but it’s always worth a bit of effort to see the world laid out before you from the top of the Warrumba Range, and getting there is a large part of the enjoyment too.
We came off the mountain down a dry-as-a-bone watercourse littered with boulders which sometimes required a bit of thinking to negotiate, but, at the bottom again, we all felt we had a very good walk.
Sincere thanks to Ian and Karen Brenner for allowing us on their property, and to Ian for leading.
The plan next Sunday is to meet at the Grenfell CWA at 7.30am, and drive out to Koorawatha via the route with the multiple rail crossings – always a pretty run.
We’ll pause in Koorawatha for five minutes or so, in case someone there might like to join us, and then go into the Reserve to park at the designated recreation area.
We’ll dawdle along to the Falls, come back for breakfast and perhaps a talk about what we might do next year, and should be back in Grenfell by noon.
Wendy Johnson has tentative plans for a regional (i.e. Out of the Shire) walk in February, and as for the other months, we will probably surprise even old hands with walks over country new to us.
We’ll keep you posted.
Weddin Wanderers is a most informal group – no executive, no business meetings, no fees – so just come and have a look at a very pretty part of our region.
Sunday November 15, CWA, 7.30am and join us for Croissants at Koorawatha.
